If you want to know more about football betting, you're in the right place.
Whether you're placing your first bet or looking to sharpen your approach, this is where it all makes sense. We'll walk you through how football betting works, the markets available and how to get the most out of every matchday with us.
Pick a match, back a result and see how it plays out. That's the basic premise. You place a bet predicting an outcome - a team to win, a scoreline or a player to score - and if it lands, you get paid at the odds available when you placed the bet.
For a standard match result bet, you're backing one of three outcomes: a home win, an away win or a draw. The bet settles on the full-time score. Simple in theory, endlessly interesting in practice.
And that's just the starting point. Football has one of the deepest betting menus in sport, and we'll get into the full range of markets below.
Ready to get involved? Here's how it works in five straightforward steps:
Register with someone who offers football betting. That’s us.
Find the competition/match you want to bet on.
Choose your bet from a selection of football betting markets.
Put your stake forward, using funds deposited in your account.
Review your betting slip and hit confirm. Well done, you’re in.
That's all it takes. Pick your match, back your judgement and see how it plays out.
Every bet starts with a prediction. The sharper your research, the better informed that prediction is. And that's where football betting tips earn their keep. Here's where to look:
Team performance in recent matches
Data-driven statistical analysis
Pundit opinions leading up to the match
News items like player injuries
Odds given by bookmakers
When deciding how to bet, keep an eye on as many of these data sources as you can. If you think a team will win their next match, and then you find some tips that back up your gut feeling, then you’ll feel more confident placing your bet. Of course, confidence is no guarantee of success, but it’s a good place to start.
If you're newer to betting, focusing on one team or one league is a sensible starting point. It keeps the amount of information manageable and means you can build genuine knowledge rather than spreading yourself thin. The more familiar you are with the teams and players you're betting on, the better placed you are to spot value when it's there.
Some markets suit certain bettors better than others. Here's a breakdown of the most popular options and how each one works:
The most common football bet is the match result, or 1X2. It’s what we described above – you bet on a home team win (1), a tie (X), or an away team win (2). Simple and sharp.
There are also double chance bets. They’re like 1X2 bets, but you back two options instead. You cover home win or draw, or away win or draw. You could even cover home win and away win, so you’d only lose if they tie.
Other popular football betting markets are:
Both Teams to Score (BTTS): A yes/no bet. Bet on if both teams will hit the net at least once.
Draw No Bet (DNB): No draw option. Ties refund your stake.
Correct Score: Bet on what the scoreline will look like at the end of the match.
Handicaps: Bet with or against a team’s handicap. Teams need to win or lose by a certain number of goals here.
Totals: Bet on the total number of goals scored by both teams on the pitch.
Goalscorers: Bet on specific players to score a goal, and if they’ll score the first or last goals in a match.
Don’t forget your accas and bet builders, too. That’s where you place multiple bets in one neat package. Accas cover more than one match, bet builders focus on the same match. They can be valuable if you win every leg of the bet, but it only takes one lost leg to void the whole deal.
Odds tell you two things: the implied probability of an outcome and how much you stand to collect if it lands. Before you back anything, it's worth knowing how to read them.
Here’s a choice example of football betting odds, so you know what to expect when you check in at the bookmakers.
Basics first – the match result bet. Manchester United is gunning for Liverpool at home. You might see odds like this (these are for illustrative purposes only):
Liverpool to win | 3/4 |
Draw | 14/5 |
Manchester United to win | 7/2 |
We work with fractional odds here – the fractions just mean profit/stake. Liverpool is the favourite here, so the returns are more modest: £3 profit for every £4 staked. Manchester United are the underdogs, which means longer odds and a higher potential return for those who back them. The draw sits at longer odds still, reflecting the fact that most matches produce a clear winner. Back the market leader or take a view on the underdog. The odds are there to help you decide.
For the totals markets, you’ll need to pay attention to another set of figures. You’ll see totals presented with the usual odds beside a decimal number. That decimal is the score. You bet on whether the score goes over or under 2.5, for example. We both know that .5 of a goal isn’t possible. That’s there to avoid pushed bets and make sure there’s a winner.
You’ll see similar numbers for the handicap bets, though they’ll typically come as a whole number. If Liverpool has a -1 handicap, they need to win by two or more goals. The underdog team needs to win or draw. Some betting markets use the Asian handicap system, where a draw handicap bet isn’t allowed. In those cases, you may see .5 decimal numbers like you would with totals.

Football runs year-round across dozens of leagues and competitions. Here's a look at the main ones you'll find at Monopoly Casino & Sport:
In the UK, there’s the Premier League, while you’ll find La Liga in Spain and the Serie A in Italy. In these leagues, each team plays 38 games a season, meaning plenty of opportunities to launch a bet. Together, each league builds towards bigger event matches like the high-stakes clashes of the Champions League and the Europa League.
The Euros and the FIFA World Cup operate on a different scale entirely. Held every four years, both tournaments bring national sides together in the sport's biggest competitive arena. Squad depth, player fitness and tournament experience all become factors that don't apply in the same way during a regular league season, which means the research that goes into your bets shifts accordingly.
There's no formula for a winning bet. The result on the pitch decides that. But there are habits that sharper bettors develop over time, and they're worth knowing.
Keeping strict control over your betting funds is one of the most important habits to develop. Keep your betting money separate from your day-to-day finances and only ever bet what you're comfortable losing. A sensible approach is to set a bankroll and stake only a small, consistent percentage of it per bet rather than chasing bigger returns with bigger stakes.
Backing your own team can be part of the fun, but letting emotion drive your decisions rarely leads to good outcomes. If you find a result is affecting your enjoyment of the game rather than adding to it, step back. Betting should add to the experience, not complicate it.
Social media, club channels and sports news outlets give you access to team form, injury updates and other information that can be genuinely useful when assessing a market. The key is knowing what's relevant and what's noise.
Markets shift as matchday approaches. Late team news, injury announcements and betting patterns can all move the odds. Keep an eye on how a market is moving and decide when the right moment to place your bet is. Early odds aren't always the best ones, but leaving it too late means you might miss the price you wanted.
Some bettors rely on football betting systems to structure their bets. It works for some, while others prefer the freedom of picking and choosing how they engage with a market.
Play smart, stay informed and know when to step back. That's the approach.
A good football betting app should be fast, easy to navigate and give you access to the full range of markets without having to work for it. Here's what to look for:
How clean the interface looks
How many sports and betting markets they cover
Their promotions for new and existing bettors
If they host in-play betting options
Their support for responsible betting
Licensing and data protection measures
The MONOPOLY Casino app is built to cover all of it: full football market coverage, a welcome offer for new players, responsible gambling tools and live in-play betting across major matches. Available on iOS and Android.
The pre-match markets are just the starting point. Once the whistle blows, in-play betting opens up a whole new range of options.
They come with a dynamic odds interface that tracks changes on the pitch in real time. They typically track:
Scoring. Favourites scoring solidifies their lead, underdogs scoring evens the odds.
Cards. A star player getting red-carded can hurt a team’s odds.
Penalties. They often make the difference between a win and a loss.
This is all tracked instantly by a heavy-duty algorithm, though you may see short suspensions during major events. Live football betting also means you get a set of ‘next’ bet options. What player will score next? Which team will score next? The kind of fast-paced bets that you can’t make before the match starts. You can also bet on what the score will be at a specific time interval, instead of being locked to the usual 90-minute mark that pre-match bets use.
Bettors use live football betting for many different reasons. Some prefer to wait and catch (hopefully) better odds in real time. Others use it to back up pre-match bets, or hedge if a pre-match bet isn’t going the way they planned. If you’re new to betting, we’d recommend floating a few pre-match bets first. Then once you feel ready, you can try out live football betting.

Match result, both teams to score, correct score, handicaps, total goals, goalscorer markets and accumulators are all available across the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and more.
In-play markets open at kick-off, with odds updating in real time as the match unfolds. A goal, red card or penalty will shift the market immediately. Cash out is also available on selected markets.
An acca combines multiple selections into one bet and each one needs to win for it to pay out, but returns increase with each leg added. Bet builder lets you combine markets within a single fixture.
